For the past 5 years, our office has been moving into a more holistic type of dentistry; better nutrition, better breathing, and most of all, better sleeping. We now work with a chiropractors, acupuncturists, holistic psychiatrists and psychologists, physical and nutritional therapists and sleep medicine specialists on a healthier way of living. We have found that properly diagnosed and treated sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, and also incorporating meditation and yoga for relaxation, helps those with dental anxiety and fears thus eliminating the need for certain psychotropic drugs and relieving their side effects.
This is a first in a series of patient experiences living a more natural healthier and happier life.
Oil Pulling For Your Overall Health
By Heather Hammerling
For the past few weeks I have been experimenting with a health practice referred to as oil pulling. After reading various online testimonials about the benefits oil pulling can have for your overall health, especially dental health, I knew I had to give it a try. Now every morning before I have my breakfast, I place one tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth and swish it around for about 20 minutes. The solid form of the coconut oil turns into a liquid after a few seconds, and becomes easier to swish. During the 20 minutes I typically prepare my breakfast and do other morning task to keep myself distracted. After the 20 minutes, I spit the oil out into the garbage and rinse my mouth with warm water. I brush my teeth after as well to make sure any residual oil is out of my mouth, then I continue on with my morning.
I plan on continuing to oil pull, as I have already noticed that my teeth look whiter and my mouth just feels cleaner. Detoxifying first thing in the morning makes me feel better, both mentally and physically. The potential benefits on my overall health have hooked me on the natural remedies used by Dr. MacFarlane.
