Aromatherapy

Visiting the dentist can be an uncomfortable experience for some people. While in many cases, traditional methods for relieving anxiety are effective, at The Center for Holistic Dental Medicine we believe that alternative methods of helping our patients relax can be just as beneficial and successful.

Our dentist, Dr. Glenn A. MacFarlane, DMD, often uses aromatherapy to enable our patients to have a positive experience when they visit us for treatment. The sense of smell is extremely important and many people are sensitive to the odors associated with a visit to the dentist. The organ involved in the sense of smell is directly connected to the brain and addressing this sense can have a positive effect on a patient’s emotions.

Aromatherapy is not using a scented candle to make the office and exam room smell pleasant. However, it is using essential oils often with a diffuser to create a calming and relaxing atmosphere. The oils may also be placed on a piece of gauze, or mixed with water in a spray bottle. Unlike a commercial room deodorizer or air freshener, essential oils contain unique, natural ingredients that can relieve your anxiety and help you relax before and during your visit with Dr. MacFarlane. You may also want to talk with Dr. MacFarlane about how you can use aromatherapy after a treatment at our office to assist you in recovering.
