Even if you remember to brush after every meal and to limit your in-between meal snacks, if you aren’t cleaning the areas between your teeth, you are still at risk for cavities and gum disease. Your toothbrush can’t reach between your teeth, and while mouthwash is a great way to augment your oral hygiene routine, it still can’t wash those areas. In order to make sure that you are taking care of your smile, you should floss your teeth at least once a day. Many people choose to floss just before bed.
It doesn’t matter if you brush or floss first, as long as you do a thorough job of both. There is not much a difference between waxed and unwaxed dental floss, although waxed floss may slide more easily between your teeth and around your dental work. Monofilament floss is less likely to shred during use than nylon floss. Start with about 18 inches of floss and wrap the majority of it around your middle fingers, holding one to two inches between your thumb and forefingers. Start by flossing your back teeth, working your way to the front. Curve the floss around your tooth; and floss below, and then away from your gums. Use a fresh section of floss between each tooth, and dispose of the floss when you are done.
